1 Which of the following statements must be true?

    Explanation

Andrea has 10+B friends whilst Boris and Dominic each have 7+A+B friends so will have fewer friends if A is 2 or fewer.

2 Which of the following statements must be true?
  • 5
    2

    Explanation

    Gardens with Roses

    = 9 + X + Y + 6 + 8 + 3

    = 26 + X + Y

    Gardens with Tulips

    = 2 + 3 + 6 + 8 + X + Y

    = 19 + X + Y

The second easiest to rule out is B because we just have to add up the numbers that are not in overlapping regions. Adding up 4 + 3 + 7 + 6 = 20 – B is false.

Looking at these statements, the easiest to rule out is C because we just have to check if there is a region that has all four circles overlapping or not. There is no such region, so zero gardens have all four flowers – C is false.

    Gardens with Daffodils

    = 4 + 2 + 9 + X

    = 15 + X

C is also correct because the calculation of gardens with all 4 flowers is exactly zero.

3 Which of the following statements must be true?
  • 2
    3

    Explanation

The values for each are as follows:
    Chocolate – 7+x+y, Banana – 11+x, Strawberry – 12+y.
This means that if x is two greater than y then banana will be more popular than strawberry.
    E.g. for x = 3 and y = 1, banana = 14 and strawberry = 13.

If x is two bigger than y means that, X could be 2 and banana 1. But the example given says 3 for X and 1 for y. This would be three times bigger, not 2.

If x=2 and y=1 then they are equal thus not filling the requirement of the answer

Why isn't C the correct answer?

banana= 5+2+4+(2)-presuming x is only 1 bigger than y. This equals 13. strawberry= 6+2+4+(1)=13. both are the same therefore there must be a mistake with the answer...???

The answer should be C because it said chocolate only Why does no one reply here

The answer can not be C because chocolate only is 3, while banana and strawberry is 2. So banana and strawberry is the least favourite topping (of the values that we know, but x or y could also be less than 3)

x>y could be x=1 and y=0 which would make banana=11+1=12 and strawberry=12+0=12. As a result answer A is incorrect

A group of applicants for interpreting jobs at a Czech company were asked to list which foreign languages they had a working proficiency in. The four most common were French, German, Spanish, and English.

French is represented by the rhombus.

Spanish is represented by the triangle.

German is represented by the oval.

English is represented by the rectangle.

4 Which of the following statements is correct?
  • 4
    19

    Explanation

    The correct answer is B.

The total number of English speakers is 42.

Five sixths of this number would be 5/6 x 42 = 35 people.

Within the rectangle for English, we can see that 6 people do not speak another language.

Therefore, 36 people who speak English also speak another language, and option B is correct.

I now know that b is correct, because the total speakers of English are 42, and 42x 5/6 is 36 which is 42 minus the number of English-only speakers which is 6

    How is B right? The total is 42 and multiplied by 5/6 = 35 and then 42-35 = 7 not 6. Shouldn't the right answer be D?

B is right as the questions says at least 5/6. Of the 42 English speakers if 5/6 were to speak another language then we need at least 35 that can speak another language. Upon adding 36 speak at least another language therefore is B :)

    How is 42*5/6=36??? Medicmind Tutor

QG magazine did a survey of their readers to assess their knowledge of Black-Tie attire brands. They asked if individuals were aware of four brands:

    • Hoge Bess, represented by the heart.
    • Tap Mon, represented by the hexagon.
    • Sleeters, represented by the trapezium
    • Heckitt, represented by the Square.

5 Which of the following statements is correct?
  • 1
    21

    Explanation

Statement 3 is the correct answer. Here, it’s worth noting on your whiteboard the numbers included in the square (representing Heckitt) and at least one other. The keyword ‘at least’ tells us we should include overlaps with more than one other shape as well. This is 6 + 2 + 8 + 4 + 8 + 4 + 6. In total, this gives 38 people who know of both Heckitt and at least one other company. Overall, 60 people were surveyed which gives us a total of 38/60, which is a little less than 2/3 which would be 40/60.

Statement 1 is incorrect. We see that overall 31 people had heard of Tap Mon, but of these 17 had heard of Hoge Bess which is just over half.

Statement 2 is incorrect. Overall, 25 people had heard of Sleeters. There are only 8 that had heard of all 3, which is less than a third.

Statement 4 is incorrect. From previous analysis we know that overall 60 people were surveyed, and we see that only 17 knew of only one brand. This is more than 15, a quarter of 60.
